Unbelievable! Astonishing! But it is a fact that there is at least one village in Sabah which is more backward than some or the worst places on earth! There is Sabah is a village of approximately 200 families who do not seem to think right, do not know how to differentiate between right and wrong or good and bad. And the name of this village is special too. It is known as Kampung Istimewa which is Bahasa Malaysia for Special Village.
There we have all the villagers who refuse to really participate in the process of selecting the right representative. They do not want to know any opposition candidate. Yet, they are apparently not stupid as they have a banner up informing opposition parties not to campaign in their village.
Or are those people so stupid that they have become someone’s puppets on a string, obeying every move of a puppeteer who, if there is one, must be from the governing party. And from what they said, they seem to refuse to see the weakness of previous politicians.
They knew that their previous elected representative, who was from the governing political party, had not fulfilled his promise to build the villagers a water tank. Yet, they believed the next elected representative from the same party would do it for them although they had never met or known the person at all.
And when they were asked of the opportunities the ruling party had given to help the poor of their town, they could not think of anything. And those approximately 700 Kampung Istimewa residents lived in “tattered conditions with many youths jobless and the others, working in low-wage jobs as factory workers or fishermen’, according to a writer in The Malaysian Insider.
Some would say, ”Serves them right to support so blindly despite living in such conditions and with promises not carried out.”
Can we actually blame them? Could it be a lack of knowledge and education? Even among our more educated ones, there are those who refuse to see that there is a better alternative. And any alternative must be better if our future seems to be stuck while other countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines push ahead economically despite having less natural resources than our country. Furthermore, if the alternative does not prove to be better, we can always go back to the first party after five years.
And the worst, most unbelievable part of it all is that those villagers consider the citizens who voted against the government as traitors. Do they understand the democratic process? Obviously no! They do not understand that speaking out our problems and voting in people we strongly believe can help us solve them is a basic right in a democracy.
When such basic things are incomprehensible to those people, where is the place for reason and understanding? Nowhere! Unless we change that and such a change can only come about with education. That is why education is of great importance in developing a nation.
The opposition of course respected the right of those people not to listen to it, but the opposition must not just walk away and leave those poor folks to suffer in their ‘darkness’. Win or lose, the opposition must be willing to take education to those people so that their minds can see the light of knowledge and truth. Education is the tool to knowledge and better understanding of the various issues of life and truth.

Politicicians must never be racial.
This morning I stopped at my usual 'nasi lemak' stall to get a packet of tasty rice with its eggs, fish and prawns for my breakfast. While waiting for the lady to prepare my packet I had the opportunity of watching unity among fellow Malaysians. Besides me, there were some Malays and Indians waiting for the food. They were exchanging greetings and small talk while one elderly Malay man was serenading a little Indian girl with a Hindi song.
Now there is nothing unusual about the scene as it is common to see such happenings, except for the serenading of course, at the morning market or along grassy paths where people from all races come together to exercise. Even in the Tai Chi group can be seen some Malay members. So, basically all Malaysians are a united people.
How is it then that the news media is constantly producing views of deteriorating unity among the races? Who are the people shouting and screaming about Malays losing power? Who are those who say that the Malays will be weak and become economically backwards if another party were to take over the government? Who are those who claim that the other minority races such as the Chinese and the Indians would want to take over everything, that they are the enemy the Malays have to watch out for. Once someone even hinted at a Chinese becoming the Prime Minister to frighten his race. Such obvious untruth is being spread. Anyway, if we are matured enough, what's wrong with any Malaysian becoming the Prime Minister if all of us trust him to look into the welfare of all the people? Look West at America. Is the present President of the USA talking only about improving the lot of just one race? Are the Americans worried about that? How can the Malays be losing power when they are the majority race, when the other political group has Malay leaders as well? Yet, what is certainly nonsense does have some influence on the thoughts of certain people.
Now, all this is played out with an ulterior motive. Look at the people who voice such fears and threats to the people. Who are they? They are those who hope to achieve even greater power through their rantings. They are the politicians, the very people we hope to unite the people and take the country to greater heights. These are the people we hope to bring greater peace and prosperity. Yet, these are the people who influence those that they can so that the people remain disunited in order to gain votes. Votes is their ultimate desire!
Yes, the main objective is to get votes so that they can either achieve or stay in power. And when it comes to staying in power, a study of what has been happening in this country clearly shows that they are willing to sacrifice a lot in order to be holding on to that power.
It is indeed sad that humans are willing to stoop that low to conquer; even to the extent of causing disunity and threatening disaster. The fortunate thing is, with education and understanding more and more are becoming impervious to political nonsense and insincerity. Many can see vividly the falsehood they propagate.
Education is the way to bring citizens to the level where their minds are able to visualise clearly the difference between right and wrong, good or bad. It is the one bright hope to humanity's welfare although the state of affairs in our world indicates that we are still far from such untainted understanding.

All humans are the same wherever they may be. Who causes the difference?
How we take for granted our neighbours’ presence as we live our lives from day to day sharing each other’s joy and sadness, living our lives safe in the knowledge that there are friendly people around us regardless of the neighbour’s race, religion or beliefs and cultures.
In the 1950’s when I was living in Caunter Hall, now known as Jalan P. Ramli, Penang, a number of families lived in a huge bungalow house with seven rooms, each room housing a family. Some rooms were not as safe as others as their doors face the outside of the house while some rooms are safer as the doors lead out into an enclosed locked area with the common kitchen and big bathroom within that enclosed locked area.
Safer or not, all the families knew that help was always available should the alarm be sounded. Of course, in those days, there was no electronic alarm device which could turn on lights and alert the occupants with loud sounds should there be movement detected in the darkness of the night. But what they had was just as effective for should any occupant were to hear any suspicious movement or sound outside, he or she immediately reaches for a metal pan or its lid and hit it with a stick to sound the alarm, thus awakening all the other households, with every awaken occupant reaching for his or her own pot and stick to add to the din and that was sufficient to deter any robber or mischief maker from continuing with his/her nefarious activity. Pots and pans must be cheap in those days. Either that or they did not mind having dented pots and pans to cook with and possibly broken wooden ladles
And in those days, the Chinese, Indians and the Malays live closer to each other, especially in the rural areas where the simple folks only think of themselves as humans living together with a togetherness that has unfortunately been destroyed by the craze for power and ego politically and in matters of religion where there are those who divide humans into races and religions in order to master the power over God’s people. (To me, everyone is God’s people and God does not belong to anyone, for God is the creator.) These power crazy people use race and religion to separate the people, dividing them, creating the idea that certain races are more superior to others and certain religions the only religion of God, putting in human laws and professing such laws the words of God sometimes by having differing interpretation of words in holy books so that today in every existing religion, there are so many sects or groups with slightly different beliefs and these different sects are not on friendly terms with each other and in such a manner are moving away from the most important teachings of God, one of which is that all men are brothers, therefore women sisters. All are the same in the eyes of God Almighty.
Let us go back to those old days in Caunter Hall, Penang, where of the seven families, one of them was an Indian Muslim family. Although the family practiced the Islamic religion, praying at mosques and not eating pork, they cook in the same kitchen where others cooked their pork and sometimes accept and eat boiled cubed sweet potatoes from the same bowls as those used by the others, as the religion does not want its followers to eat pork and that is accepted and understood by everyone and no one would insist a Muslim should eat pork. With that understanding, they would eat at the same table too, respecting each and everyone with their religion's do and don't. And none felt any other difference among themselves except where religious rules are concerned.
Today, as politics and religious leaders put more meaning into race and religion, more differences are created and many Muslims cannot accept the sight or presence of pork. Sometimes, there is so much suspicion on the food available when it is prepared by people from another religion, even when those people are friends who would never knowingly hurt the feelings of their friends. Some would not take food even from the same bowls or utensils just as some Buddhist separate their utensils from those of non-vegetarians. Do we have to be more than just not eating a particular food? Does God mean us to be this way. Where the Buddhists are concerned, the religion encourages them to eat vegetarian food because Buddhists believe they should not kill and therefore by not eating meat, the necessity to kill the animals is eliminated. But to use utensils which had never been used to cook meat, I think that is not what the Buddha teaches.
It happened a few years ago. This friend was so disappointed especially as he believed that his friends were different. Although the relatives and in-laws had advised him against it, in a positive state of mind he went ahead and reserved some tables in one section and had ordered Muslim food from another restaurant to be delivered there so that all his friends, regardless of race would be there to celebrate the most important occasion of his life, his marriage. Unfortunately, less than half of the expected guests of those specially reserved tables were present. Here was a man who thought his well-educated friends were above those divisive ideas but instead had a lesson delivered on that occasion. Yet it ought not to have happened as suitable food had been provided. If the place was not suitable, would the few who came had come? Who caused such a feeling of difference? It certainly is not God’s doing. God would not be that small minded to mind the place. From what I observed, it is the slow but gradual planting of suspicion in the mind that leaders do to divide, inculcating a difference and inferring that the leaders’ ideology is far more superior than the others.
This superiority complex has been a thorn in the peaceful togetherness of humans. It is the idea of race superiority that led Alexander the Great to conquer other countries, to become their conqueror and have them be the conquered. Then, the same superiority led Hitler and the Nazis to cause so much death and destruction during the First World War. Again, the belief in Japanese’s supremacy took on the world to prove Japan’s greatness through another round of death and destruction only to shaken from their illusion by the atomic bomb. Man has learned from history and understands that with nuclear bombs available, a third world war can lead to the destruction of the human race or worst, the remaining humans maimed or scarred or permanently affected by the nuclear chemicals, living a life of misery, a horrid reminder of human follies.
So history has to be taught to every child in order that such a folly will never befall us to the extent of causing man not just to cause division through some kind of dislike or hatred but a war in which can possibly bring the end to this world or as I have said something incredibly worse.

Education is vital to right parenting.
Why do we have children taking drugs, stealing, begging on the streets, involved in child-prostitution and smoking? They could be doing it for the money or the pleasure, unaware of the dangers to themselves. The thing is if those children have parents, parents who are supposed to be their protectors and educators, what have those parents done to ensure that the children are not involved in such dangerous activities?
Perhaps those parents had not sufficient education or knowledge of the dangers of such pursuits and they think it is alright for the children to experience such things. Without enough education and knowledge or the maturity to understand the seriousness of the problem, there could be parents who think it is alright to do some of the things we believe are wrong or dangerous.
Recently, on You-tube was this video of an Indonesian two-year old obese toddler who smoke forty cigarettes a day. It is not so much the number of cigarettes that grabs the reader as the age of the child. At that age, how could the child be able to take up smoking if not for the introduction to cigarettes by his own father. The father did that to him at the age of eighteen months.
What was worse was the fact that that father said there was nothing wrong with his son smoking as he was in good health. Of course, he was still in good health. Smoking in itself does not kill but it weakens the lungs and the body with the toxins it brings, giving disease such as cancer the opportunity to strike. However, should cancer be detected it may be a little too late for the father to help his son although there are cases of recovery from cancer. Obviously, the poor father does not understand that a month's cigarette smoke may not damage his health but with his addiction to nicotine, could he stop completely and if not, after many months or years of smoking what can possibly happen to his lungs and health. Well, the father probably did not read about any research where cigarette smoke has been found to be hazardous to health.
At this point, I remember that there are individuals who are still healthy in their seventies despite many years of smoking. But then I wish to point out that such individuals have a body well taken care of with enough exercise to get rid of the toxins ingested. They have constantly been active and are not couch potatoes. Their organs are also in tip-top condition and smoking is their only abuse of their bodies.
But then, how many smokers exercise sufficiently to get rid of the toxins inhaled or drink enough water to help their kidneys remove the toxins. Smell the sweat or urine of heavy smokers and the nicotine smell is sure to be evident in them. And if we do not get rid of those toxins, where do you think the toxins will remain? Where else but in the body, of course. The toxins will then poison the only one body that we have been given. Sorry, there is no spare part yet.
If parents understand the dangers of having toxins in the body through smoking or the environment or certain food and drinks, as they love their children, they would certainly not expose their children to the toxins. Therefore, education to all adults is just as important as it is to all children.

A tribute to the teachers.
I received the email below from a teacher. As a retired teacher myself, I know that there are places where teachers are not well respected. Of course, there are instances where teachers themselves are to blame for some of them, like some in the other professions, treat their work as just another means to a pay-check. But then, there are good, if not excellent, teachers who are truly dedicated to their profession. Such teachers throughout the world ought to read what one lady has to say about a teacher's job and what she thinks of those who have no respect for the jobs done by others. I totally agree with her and therefore, I would like to thank the writer of this article. Unfortunately, I do not know who he/she is and therefore am unable to request for permission to have it put here.

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO (proud of being a professional), decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, ‘What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?' (I decided to be a teacher even when I was in primary school simply because a few of my teacher were great in inspiring me to do something meaningful in life and teaching is one of those things.) He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers:'Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.' (That is obviously from someone who do not understand for I am one of those who can use as well teach English very well.) To stress his point he said to another guest; 'You're a teacher, Mary. Be honest. What do you make?' Mary, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, 'You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, and then began...)
'Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Medal of Honor. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental. You want to know what I make?' (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)
''I make kids wonder. I make them question. I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in maths. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand, to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the National Flag, and sing the National Anthem, because we live in this great country. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.'
Mary paused one last time and then continued, then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant..... You want to know what I make. I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make Mr. CEO?' His jaw dropped, he went silent.
THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER YOU KNOW. and all your personal teachers like mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents, your spiritual teachers, (everybody, for everyone of us who do take time to teach a child is a teachers. Just as I have said before, every parent is a teacher to his/her child.)

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in maths. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand, to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the National Flag, and sing the National Anthem, because we live in this great country. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.'
Mary paused one last time and then continued, then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant..... You want to know what I make. I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make Mr. CEO?' His jaw dropped, he went silent.

What education policy to help children?
We ought to remember and understand that every individual in this world, be they big or small, is unique in his or her own way. All of us are different in certain ways, just as all of us are similar in some other ways but no two individuals are totally the same.
Therefore, if we wish to find science students, we should look for those who have an inclination towards science. Similarly, when we want to have linguist, we search for students who have a talent for languages. And if we need to get artists, we go for those who are able to draw or paint or sculpt. To discover singers and musicians, we ought to have a talent hunt for people with melodious voices and a sense of notes and tones.
As such it is crazy for anybody to think of sending for further studies people who have the best all round development, meaning that the chosen ones must be good if not excellent physically, academically, emotionally and spiritually. An excellent scientist may have no interest whatsoever in sports activities or religious matter. So, if we were to deduct marks from him/her for his disastrous performance in sports or religious matters, it could be possible to have him out of the list of successful candidates for further studies. We could then have lost the great potential development of a fantastic scientist. His capability and talents in achieving award-winning technology would be lost to the world, holding back its progress possibly by a few hundred years. Of course, our only consolation and comfort is that we would never realise our loss.
In fact, what the Malaysian government did some years ago was similar. The Education policy then was to create as many science students as possible. To improve science and technology, they send all the best standard six pupils to the science stream. They forgot that even historians, linguists and pupils in the arts stream can be just as clever as science pupils at that level. With that kind of sorting out the students, even excellent economist and linguists were sent to the science stream where they gradually find themselves slowly getting disinterested in the subjects offered them. It was a pity to find such good students become mediocre not because they do not have intelligence but their potential was in a sometimes totally different field.

So, I told him it could be a blessing in disguise as his son had the subject where his interest is greatest and therefore although he might be starting at a college instead of the university, his interest could possibly take him even further than where he was in time to come. Interest is important as it is a kind of natural inclination which stays with us and will consistently urge us forward to further our knowledge.
A person interested in the type of work in his job does that job for not just the money but the fun of doing it. That makes him a happier, better worker.
I am not saying that we should not strive to be a well-rounded person. It is ideal to have that but it is not essential or necessary. Not being a well-rounded person does not make a scientist any less healthier and educated in the true sense of the word. A scientist can still go for the pleasures of a fast walk or a jog with family and friends or alone. That would be sufficient to have him healthy. For relaxation and recreation or a social life, mingling with all kind of people from various races, culture and religions could give him the opportunity to mix well with others and learn about the various types of people, their cultures, their way of life, their religions and appreciate them. That is true education, not just memorised knowledge and formulas from books. How can we consider ourselves to be truly educated if we do not understand people; giving here a very simple example; when we cannot understand why or how some people can enjoy certain types of food we ourselves find tasteless or lousy? Take durians for example. Some people from the West do not like their smell or taste, linking the taste and smell to excreta. Yet, many of these people try them and after that some discover that the durians are just as nice to eat as other fruits. They found out that the durians just happen to have a not so familiar taste and smell. The willingness to try and experience for their own selves what others would condemn gave them the opportunity to know truly what the durian is. Though i have taken a fruit as an example, this is actually true of all things. Many condemn other religions or way of life without understanding the true nature of things. Only when there is an open mind that allows one to approach everything positively that we know and understand better the truth.

Transcending racial, cultural and religious barriers.
Look around and we see people in the political arena who put on a show of leadership through various issues and causes, purport to represent certain quarters and in doing so willingly scatter lies and half-truths to achieve their aims. Of course, there are those who genuinely fight for the rights of the downtrodden.
Especially in politics, it is so interesting to study the individuals who, despite their supposedly maturity which ought to be a necessary requirement in leadership, hurl curses and arouse their followers to racial, cultural and religious fervour.
Sometimes, the followers are to be blamed for being so easily led astray. But then that is human nature; being easily influenced by words and the person espousing the ideas and falsehood, especially when that person is of the same race and religion as his followers. Great is the guy who can get people from other races, cultures and religions to follow his ideas and opinions. Just as great are the people who are able to transcend such racial, cultural and religious influences to join someone to achieve even greater heights in whatever endeavour.
Especially in a multi-racial country, and the number of such countries is increasing as immigration of people occur frequently due to easy transport and better acceptance of talented people from other countries, national leaders must be able to transcend racial, cultural and religious differences and limits. Only when leaders are able to achieve such an open-mindedness can they be acceptable to every citizen in a country. If such leaders constantly are thinking of their original race's welfare and giving only his race preferential treatment, they can be assured of reducing support and popularity among the citizens. In Malaysia, racial parties are losing popularity as the citizens become aware of the unfairness of the policies of leaders from such racial parties. Racial parties are certainly on the way out. How can a country be really united in the true sense of the word when the leaders are always thinking along racial lines and hiding truths from the public as well as preventing their being questioned with the Official Secrets Act. (Imagine having the privatisation of its highways under the Official Secrets Act. It certainly sounds fishy.) The increase in the number of educated people, through educational institutions and the internet with easily available knowledge and understanding have mentally developed sufficiently to appreciate justice and righteousness for all human brothers and sisters.
A few years ago, we rejoice in the election of the first American Negro as the President of America. It was a moment of celebration for mankind as humans recognise the truth that all man are of the human race. It is not the member of which race who was elected but the most capable, respected individual in a country. In this aspect, Malaysia is still far behind although there are signs that people are becoming more and more truly educated. Recently, we saw a protest when a capable woman of a minority race was chosen to head just a department. The protesters claimed that heads of departments must be held by a person of the majority race. So much for the maturity and mentality of those people. Of course, it could be due to immatured leaders posturing a master race concept. These poor people forgot what happened to the Japanese with their World War One or Hitler with his Second World War. People who believe in a master race cannot be a true believer of God for God created all humans equal.
Education and understanding are important in the fight against racial, cultural and religious discrimination. Thus, it is essential that governments take education to every nook and corner of their countries, to every rural district, ensuring that schools in those areas are given all possible financial assistance to equip such schools with sufficient and proper facilities so that no child is deprived of excellent educational opportunities, no matter where he or she is located. In a country like Malaysia which ought to be rich with its many natural resources can easily implement such a development.
Unfortunately, due to reasons best known to the politicians, such a possible development never come for the rural poor. Instead, politics seems to be determined to use the excuse of improving the lot of the poor majority race to actually enrich only a small group of the majority race. And this small group of enriched politicians are still shouting the same racial cries in the hope of enriching themselves even more without much thought to the rural poor except the time before another election. Apparently, racial politics is more about enriching politicians and their cronies. Sad to say, there does not seem to be a way out as the number who are still easily led astray by racial and religious incitement is still considerable.
Therefore, the only hope which exists is the rise of multi-racial or truly Malaysian represented parties to replace such racial parties. As citizens, we have to play our part to ensure future leaders transcend racial, cultural and religious barriers.

It's time for action.
We know all kinds of intelligence we possess. So what? We understand how we may help our children to exploit this knowledge and be the best they can ever be. We know that the foetus, after four months in the womb, has almost totally developed itself to the extent that it can listen and respond, feel and react and has started to practice breathing, even though it is doing so through the fluid environment it is in, and has started sucking its thumb to prepare itself for taking the milk from its mother. So, what? Will all that ever help us to give our children a headstart in life?
No! It certainly can be of not help at all unless we take action to use the available knowledge. For example, knowing that children are able to respond to sounds at that stage in life, what is there to prevent mummy and daddy from talking to the foetus and letting it hear sounds of language.
Starting action as early as possible will help the baby to develop hearing capability earlier and learn words earlier. Of course, the foetus may not understand the words then, just as a little boy may not understand the words of his/her parents initially but store the sounds in the brain and develop a familiarity with the sounds. Later, when meaning comes through actions of the parents and the circumstances in which the words are used, it is so much easier.
It has been known that children developed the fastest during the first six or seven years of their lives. That is the time before they enter formal education. Therefore, waiting for formal education to develop the child is too late a time to start. The time to start is when the child is still a foetus. Then there has to be continuous action to develop the child to the fullest extent possible, the the child's greatest potential.
Yes, every great man or woman, just as Confusius said: "A thousand miles begin with the first step", has to start on whatever dream with the first move towards a particular objective. Unless that is done, no results can ever be achieved. Action must be taken, planned and carried each and everyday until the child reaches independence and more. Yes, everyday throughout life although after the parents' part, the child must do his/her part to be whatever is to be.
Do you know that I am still learning so much at this time of my life and discovering and understanding knowledge that, had I known them so much earlier, I would have been able to achieve what I am able to achieve today so much earlier? Thank God for that, for without such a possibility, life would certainly be dull indeed. With this possibility of achieving something new in life, I look forward each day to another rewarding experience.
Well, let us start on our children at the earliest possible. If our children are already out there somewhere on their own, let us look forward to helping our grandchildren. And if the grandchildren are still not in sight yet, let us do something for our friends and relatives. Inform them about it and get them to make this world even better than it is now. Develop the children of the future and increase the use of their brains as well as every part of the body.
The end of new knowledge and experience is still not in sight with evidence of new inventions in science and medicine as well as the records achieved by athletes. Today, I read how a young woman survived fifteen days in a collapsed building in the Haiti Quake. Fifteen days! And we thought human can only survive seventy-two hours without food and water. This knowledge could perhaps change our belief.
Whatever, it is, we are still challenged with new problems and new diseases. The world is still problematic with killings and death. There is still so much which is not perfect. So, we need better brains and better attitudes as well as better everything in life. So, there is a need to start early on children so that there will be better and find better solutions.

Another con job.
There are lots of people wanting to con someone out there. I have received so many emails telling me i have won a million dollars that I no longer read the full story anymore. The latest seem to come from Microsoft itself. As I do not have much time for some free cash, I just delete it and I am my happy old self again. You know, being a millionaire just isn't my cup of tea. Today, as I am, I do not even have to bother about locking my doors securely as sometimes I just hope someone would cart away my old furniture so that I have an excuse to buy some new ones. Well, no such luck, fellows.
Below is an email where someone experienced a new way to con some money from your relatives. As they say, to be fore-warned is to be fore-armed. So, we can learn from the experience of theis guy. We certainly would not like to learn this first-hand. So. please read on and beware!

I cannot stop myself from sharing this with all of you.
Its all started when I received a call from someone claiming that he was from Maxis and he asked me to shutdown my phone for 2 hours for 3g update to take place. As I was rushing for a meeting, I did not question him but did what I was told and just shutdown my cell phone.
After 45 minutes I felt very suspicious since the caller did not even introduce himself and tell me his name. I quickly turned on my cell phone and immediately received several calls from my family members. There were other calls as well from the number that had called me earlier.
I called my parents and was shocked to notice that they sounded very worried and asking me whether I was safe. My parents told me that they had received a call from someone claiming that they had me with them and asking for money to let me free. The call was so real and my parents even heard 'my voice' crying out loud asking for help. My parents were at the bank waiting for the next call to proceed with the money transfer. I told my parents that I was safe and told them to lodge a police report.
Right after that I received another call from the guy asking me to shutdown my cell phone for another 1 hour. I refused to do that and hung up. They kept calling my cell phone until the battery had run down. I lodged a police report and I was informed by the officer that there were many such scams reported. Most of the cases reported indicated that the victim had already transferred the money! And it was impossible to get back the money.
Be careful as this kind of scam might happen to any one of us!!! Those guys are so professional and very convincing during calls. If you are asked to shut down your cell phone for updates by the service provider, Ask around! Your family or friends might receive the same call.

5. At 10 PM, take half cup olive oil (or sesame oil) with half cup fresh lemon juice. Mix it well and drink it. The oil lubricates the stones to ease their passage.
PS. 1cup=250ml, ? cup lemon juice=3 lemons (aprox.)

Humorous ass' tale with a moral

Below is a witty play of words with an appropraite and good moral attached. It was sent to me by email and I know not the author of the story. However, since something can be learned from it, I wish to share this with all of you.
Title: The Pastor's Ass.
The pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won.
The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the Race again, and it won again.
The local paper read:
PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT.
The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in another race.
The next day, the local paper headline read:
BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS.
This was too much for the bishop, so he
ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey.
The pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent.
The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day:
NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN.
The bishop fainted.
He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10.
The next day the paper read:
NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10.
This was too much for the bishop, so he
ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild.

The moral of the story is ..... being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery. Even shorten your life...

Poverty without a scholarship need not be a hindrance.
Today I think back to a young boy who was a pupil of mine. Thinking of him, I could see that there are very few obstacles where there is determination.
Here was a boy who even had to work while studying. As a result, his marks were usually average. Though he was hard-working, there were merely twenty-four hours to work for pay, attend school and complete homework. Life sometimes is just not fair but what can we do. Are we just going to sit down and moan about it? That could be what some would do but not this boy. He was dark, thin and quite shabbily dressed. He certainly needed more attention. Yet, he persevered and though he was at times late in finishing his work; finished them, he did.
With an average SPM (That's Secondary School Examination Certificate.) results and, being a poor Chinese citizen of Malaysia without any special privileges, he had no scholarship either. Did he sit down and cry over it? No! With no possible financial help from his parents, he jumped into the first proper job he could find as an assistant to a food outlet. Then, he found a better paying job at a factory, saved as much as he could for the next few years and finally got a place in a college. He continued to work as he studied.
One advantage for him who had to work even before finishing his studies was that he understood and realised that work without a good academic qualification brought in very little money and that the future could not be too bright in such a circumstance.
He completed his college education and from college he went on to study in the University of Malaya. Life must have been tough but today he is an engineer in a company.
Well, he did it without financial support or a scholarship. It was not plain sailing but he did it through determination. At no point did he throw up his arms in despair, although he had plenty of excuses and could have done so without anyone pointing an ugly accusing finger at him. BUT, he did not! AND today, he has proved that it can be done if we put our mind to it.

Dare to do the 'impossible'.
"I'm taking thirteen subjects for my SPM, (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia which was known as the School Certificate before the name change.)" my nephew told me.
"How do you think you are going to manage that many subjects?" I questioned the decision.
"I'll do it. That's the only way to have a chance to get a scholarship to a good university education," he was determined to succeed.
"Alright. You've to understand it'll take a lot of hard work to do it. I can only assist you in art and craft and English." I told him.
In my mind, I was happy for him, happy that he had this strong desire to get extraordinarily good results. Although i have always helped and loved him, I knew I did not have the financial ability to do anything where an overseas university education was concerned. In fact I did say something to that effect to him once while encouraging him to strive for even better results, just as I did my own two children. I expected all three of them to excel in their studies for they had all consistently produced good results.
It was the year 2000, a time when the Malaysian Chinese without strong 'political cables' knew that their children with truly excellent results could not expect to get even a local university scholarship, what more an overseas education scholarship. They might just as well kill the thought.
This nephew knew his family's financial situation as I, in teaching him and my children about life, often point out how poverty can be a stumbling block to many paths to success unless we ourselves strive harder to get out of it through education and hardwork.
Thus, he worked hard, initially falling slightly in the marks he obtained as a result of the strain of taking on new subjects. It is to his credit that he pushed on determined to overcome any weakness that was bound to happen when something new had to be mastered in such a short period of time.
By mid-year, he was well on the way to excellent results. When it came to art and craft, for example, he was already good at drawing and painting. All he needed was the theory and knowledge about the crafts. He learned fast. I remembered explaining matters on certain crafts to him as I took him to or from school at certain times.
His determination to succeed eventually bore fruit when newspapers announced the best SPM Malaysian student in 2001. For the first time in SPM, a student scored A1 in 13 subjects. Usually, it was only for eight, nine or ten subjects. It had the whole nation wondering how it could be done.
Of course, it could be done. He knew it and he did it! This was proved again and again in the years that followed. It just has to take someone special to dare to do the so called impossible. Nothing is impossible as many who followed his path discovered. If I am not mistaken, there is even one girl who got A1 in 17 subjects.
Everything is possible for everyone who dares to dream. So, allow your children to do all they can to improve. Never say it cannot be done. Tell them about my nephew, Ong Jin Hock.

No unnecessary stress, please.
Yesterday evening, I had this talk with a young teacher who was very passionate about her teaching. It is because of her passion that she felt very sad about the Malaysian schools of the day.
"The headmaster demands that teachers must produce 'A' students. Most parents agree with that. Teachers go into class pressuring the students to produce nothing less than an 'A'. Do you see that? Headmasters put pressure on the teachers, the stressed teachers put pressure on the pupils and pupils end up with all that stress at such a young age. Frankly, I would certainly not want to be a child in such circumstances. No wonder, I read somewhere young school children are committing suicide.
Hell! When everyone thinks results are more important that you and your health, is there anything left to live for? None, my dear friend! nothing!
These so called educationists who are willing to stress our children just to create a name for their school are no better than slave-drivers. And what is the purpose? For that, we have to take a look at education and its main purpose.
What is education? It ought to be a system in which a child is taught to learn. Yes, taught to learn. To be able to learn, to gather information for himself/herself and his/her career, that child should to be systematically introduced to listening, reading and writing. With the basics mastered to the best of the child's ability, education ought to show the child how to use the basics learned to enjoy, understand and be able to manage the tasks of gathering information or knowledge, recording and conveying such information as well as use the acquired knowledge for everyday living and to have a career.
The potential for such development is an individual thing, some being able to achieve more than others, some less. however, with the basics mastered, life can be lived to the full and opportunities for work will be there.
Some children may not achieve high academic levels as they may not be academically inclined. But not everybody needs to be academically inclined. There have been successful people in this world who are not academically inclined. Thus, it does not, in any way, mean that the child who does not do so well academically is in any way inferior to those who can do better.
Why do I say that? As everyone knows, everyone is an individual. As individuals, each has his/her own potentials and abilities. He/She may not be good at memory work but excellent at imagination and foresight, thus capable of planning well.
And that is the reason why I have always said that being only mediocre academically does not a failure make. Success can be found in many fields. And, as I have said, there are sufficient examples of academically not proficient people becoming successful in business. A very simple example is the man who built up the Honda business in Malaysia. There are many more, and those whom I have known personally, I have written about them in this blog.
So, everyone has his/her place on this planet. All can find his/her niche. With that we can have happier and better people in this world. Happier people can never come from pressured, stressed or depressed children.
Stress can lead to many problems affecting health. Stress can take a person to an early death. So, let us find ways to overcome stress, not add on to it. Let us, as parents, release some of the stress building up in our children. Schools are giving our children sufficient pressure, as it is.
Someone could be thinking: That's easy for you to say that. Well, I do not just say it. I never made my children go for tuition. I just ensured that they had the basics through reading and enjoying story-books. I merely encouraged them with lots of praise. I did that with my nephew too. I talked to them often on all the topics I found essential for their growth. Through story-books, they learned language. Ability to understand the teachers was the first step. Then, I ensured that they had enough sleep so as not to have a tired brain unable to stay attentive to what was taught. Nutritious food was, of course, just as important.
Those were the happy, enjoyable process of learning my children went through; definitely without unnecessary stress. Of course, there is a little stress from tests, examinations, homework and the competitive spirit. However, that is healthy stress which is essential for growth.
