Good prenatal care and parent's health can prevent brain abnormalities

A week ago, a friend complained about her maid and the agency which provided her with such a maid.

According to her, the maid just could not learn to do the simple house work that is required of her. Although taught for two months the use of the washing machine, the drying of the clothes and other daily necessary maintenance work, she just could not perform without supervision.

According to the lady, the maid has no brain for learning even the simplest things.

I understood very well her frustration at having to supervise every move of the maid but I also could not help but feel sorry for the maid who could be suffering from some kind of problem due to an abnormality in her brain.

The proper development of the brain determines the future of the child. The child who has abnormalities in his/her brain will have to go through life suffering the scolding and disgust of disgruntled parents, teachers, spouse and employers.

A pregnant mother may discover from her gynecologist that abnormality in the brain may occur at prenatal stage due to poor prenatal care or the health of the pregnant mother.

Other than this, too much shaking of the head or a fall with the head striking the floor hard can cause damage.

Cerebral palsy, dyslexia and dyscalculia are the possible problems that may arise due to some abnormality of the development of the brain.

According to medical science, cerebral palsy which impairs the flow of messages from the brain to the muscles is an injury to a foetus' brain during late pregnancy or the first two years of a child's life.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder due to difficulties in recognising and understanding written language. This is not due to low intelligence or brain damage. It is believed to be due to an abnormality in the brain. According to medical science research, reading therapy has been able to stimulate as well as correct the brain.

Similar to dyslexia, is a mental disability known as dyscalculia which has to do with a poor ability at figures in arithmetic.

We are fortunate that medical science has been able to pinpoint the problems and their origins. It is up to the parents to prevent them. When faced with such problems, immediate action to consult the relevant specialists must be taken to overcome them to help the child get a better chance at success.
